Blue Box

Tonight… I saw a play.

But not just any play.

A one-woman play. Called Blue Box. (Although actually titled Blue Cunt). Written and performed by Carmen Aguirre, author of the shortlisted memoir Something Fierce.

It spans over Aguirre’s awe inspiring life as an underground revolutionary growing up in Chile. It is romance, sexuality, terror, love, family, and her struggle alongside the Chilean resistance.

The play is divided into two major story lines:

One being her life throughout her participation in the resistance and the dangers associated, all the while being followed by the secret police, and the other being a decade later, detailing her powerfully frustrating romantic entanglement with a man she obsessed over.

This performance is sassy, profound, poetic, relatable, and very intensely political. In the audience, you feel as though it is a one on one conversation with a close friend. She brings you, with her words, from hysterical laughter to the most somber of silence. Her vibrating certainty, colourful personality (and language) and blatant woman-ness have you feeling like the hummingbird she often describes in the ‘cage of her chest’ – waiting for what comes next and hanging on to her every word.

She is currently touring across Canada performing her work. If you see her breezing through your area, fellow Canadians, I strongly advise you go see it! (Seriously. It’s great).

It is a work of heart.

Hasta la proxima, mis amigos!
